Oregon City and Coast Tour from Portland

Two of the best days out from Portland, in opposite directions. Oregon City sits twenty five minutes south, where the Oregon Trail ended and the state effectively began. The coast is ninety minutes west, where the forest stops and the Pacific starts.

We run both as chauffeured private tours, either as a single long day covering the two or as separate half days. Either way the route, the timings and the driving are ours, and the day is yours.

Oregon City

Oregon City has a fair claim to being the most historically significant place in the state, and most visitors to Portland never make it there.

It was the end of the Oregon Trail, the destination that thousands of people spent six months walking towards, and the first incorporated city west of the Rocky Mountains. The End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center tells that story properly, and it lands rather differently when you are standing at the point where the walking stopped.

Willamette Falls is the other reason to come. It is the largest waterfall by volume in the Pacific Northwest, sitting in the middle of an industrial river landscape that makes the scale of it easy to underestimate until you are beside it.

The town itself is built on two levels, upper and lower, connected by a municipal elevator that is one of very few anywhere in the world. It is free, it takes about fifteen seconds, and the view from the top over the river is the best in the city.

A half day covers Oregon City comfortably, with time for lunch.

The Oregon coast

The run west from Portland on US 26 goes through the Coast Range and comes out at the Pacific, and the change in landscape over ninety minutes is the point as much as the destination.

Cannon Beach is the usual anchor. Haystack Rock stands offshore at around two hundred and thirty five feet, close enough to walk out to at low tide, and the beach either side of it runs for miles. The town behind is small, walkable and full of places to eat.

Ecola State Park is a few minutes north and gives the view most people picture when they think of this coastline, headlands, forest running down to the water, and the beach curving away below.

Seaside has the promenade, the arcades and the older seaside town character, which suits some groups better than others. Astoria, further north where the Columbia meets the ocean, has the maritime museum, the Astoria Column and a working waterfront, and it is worth the extra driving if you have the day for it.

Tillamook Creamery sits south along the 101 and is an easy addition on the way back if the group includes anyone who likes cheese or ice cream, which is most groups.

Doing both in one day

It can be done, and we run it, but it is a full day and worth going into with your eyes open.

Oregon City is south and the coast is west, so a combined tour means a proper loop rather than a straight line. Expect an early start, a long stretch of driving, and less time at each stop than a dedicated day would give you.

The advantage is that you see two completely different sides of Oregon in one go, the founding history and the Pacific, without organising two separate outings. For visitors with limited time it is often the right trade.

The vehicles

These are long days with a lot of hours in the car, so the vehicle matters more than on a short trip.

Luxury sedans, the Mercedes S-Class, Cadillac XTS and BMW 7 Series, suit up to three passengers. SUVs, the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon XL, take up to six with room for coats, bags and whatever gets bought along the way. The Mercedes Sprinter van keeps larger groups together in one vehicle, which on a day with this much driving is the difference between a shared trip and three cars following each other.

Every vehicle is a recent model and maintained to the same standard.

The chauffeurs

On a touring day the chauffeur is with you from the first stop to the last, so it matters who it is.

Ours are licensed, background checked and experienced, and they know these routes. That includes the practical parts: where to park at Cannon Beach on a busy Saturday, how the coast fog behaves in the morning, and when to leave to avoid the queue back into Portland at the end of the day.

They are also happy to be left alone. Some groups want the running commentary and some want the quiet, and either is fine.
